1. Why Fixed Gas Detector Placement Matters
A fixed gas detector can only provide reliable protection when it is installed in the right location and maintained correctly. Sensor position should be determined by gas density, potential leak points, airflow and the actual conditions of the site—not simply by the available space on an installation drawing.
2. Where Should a Fixed Gas Detector Be Installed?
2.1 Heavier-than-Air Gases
Gases such as hydrogen sulfide, LPG, gasoline vapors, VOCs and phosphine tend to sink and accumulate in low areas.
The detector should generally be positioned close to ground level and below potential collection points, such as:
- Trenches
- Sumps
- Pits
- Low-lying areas
These locations can allow leaked gas to accumulate before it disperses.
2.2 Lighter-than-Air Gases
Gases such as natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia tend to rise.
For these gases, the detector should generally be installed at a higher position, such as near:
- Ceilings
- Roof lines
- Tank tops
- Vent outlets
2.3 Gases with Similar Density to Air
Some gases, such as formaldehyde and nitrogen monoxide, can mix within the breathing zone.
For these applications, detector placement around human breathing height can be appropriate, depending on the specific application and site conditions.
3. Consider Potential Gas Leak Points
Gas detectors should be positioned according to where gas is likely to escape, not simply according to the layout of the facility.
Common leak points include:
- Valves
- Flanges
- Pumps
- Compressors
- Pipe connections
- Bends and branches
- Other process equipment
For long pipelines, additional detectors or repeaters may also be required to maintain appropriate monitoring coverage.
4. Locations to Avoid
Even when the detector is installed at the correct height, the surrounding environment can affect measurement reliability.
Avoid placing detectors directly in areas exposed to:
- Fan outlets or strong air currents
- Door and window drafts
- High-temperature equipment
- Areas where water collects
- Heavy dust or mist
- Strong electromagnetic interference
- Continuous direct sunlight
Strong airflow may disperse the target gas before it reaches the sensor, while heat, moisture, dust and electromagnetic interference can affect sensor performance or signal stability.
5. Installation Is Only the Beginning
A fixed gas detector is not a “install and forget” device.
Routine maintenance determines whether the detector can continue providing trustworthy readings over time.
Recommended maintenance should include:
- Regular calibration
- Inspection of the sensor
- Cleaning or replacement of protective films
- Checking sampling components
- Inspection of wiring and connections
- Verification of alarm functions
The exact maintenance interval should follow the detector’s operating manual and the requirements of the specific application.
6. Sampling and Sensor Protection
For pipeline or remote sampling applications, sampling flow needs to remain within the specified operating range.
For Oceanus systems, the recommended sampling flow is 160–250 mL/min. If the flow moves outside the appropriate range, measurement stability may be affected.
Where smoke, humidity or dust is present, appropriate filtration should be used before the sample reaches the sensor.
Electrochemical sensors should also not be continuously exposed to high concentrations of target gas, as prolonged exposure can shorten sensor life and affect subsequent detection performance.
